The Register of Australian and New Zealand Ships and Boats

Builder's plates

This page shows examples of plates fitted by Australian and New Zealand Ship and Boat builders. Some of these are small, some are large. However, all are an expression of pride by the builders in the product of their labour. After handover, the builder's plate was sometimes kept highly polished, sometimes it was left to go green with neglect. Nowadays, a builder's plate may be the only tangible reminder of a ship or boat long gone.

This great photo of a sailor polishing the HMAS Arunta's builder's plate with pride is part of the Australian War Memorial Naval Historical Collection ID No.300200.
